Best Class for Launch
There's no single correct pick — the classic job kits trade off in ways that matter more at low, slow-rate levels than they do on modern GMS.
On a classic-rate server, leveling is slower and gear is scarcer than what most players remember from modern GMS. That changes which class strengths actually matter early on. Here's how the four base job lines tend to play out before first job advancement and through the early-to-mid game.
Warrior
The most forgiving starting pick. High base HP and simple AP allocation (mostly STR, some DEX for accuracy) mean you can survive early mistakes that would kill a squishier class. Warriors don't need much gear to start clearing content — a basic weapon and armor carries you further than it would a mage or thief. The tradeoff is a slower, more repetitive early rotation with fewer options until later skills come online.
Magician
The roughest early stretch of any class — low HP, MP management is a real constraint before you get sustain skills, and mana costs eat into your ability to just keep attacking. What you're buying with that difficulty is strong area damage once you have a few levels of an AoE spell, which matters a lot for party-quest and multi-target training later. If you can get through the first several levels (often easier with help from a party), the payoff curve is steep.
Bowman
Steady single-target damage from range, without the HP fragility of a mage. The catch is gear dependency — bows and arrows matter more to a bowman's output than equivalent gear matters to a warrior, so if the server's early item economy is thin, you'll feel it. A solid middle-ground pick if you want ranged play without magician-tier fragility.
Thief
Fast, mobile, and rewarding once you have the right gear — but that gear (LUK-scaled claws/daggers) tends to be the scarcest early-game equipment on a fresh server, since everyone's economy is still bootstrapping. Expect a slower ramp than the other classes purely because of equipment availability, not because the class itself is weak.
So which one?
If you want the least friction while you learn the server's actual rates, pick Warrior. If you're comfortable grinding through a hard early stretch for a stronger payoff, Magician. If you want ranged play without magician fragility, Bowman. If you don't mind being gear-limited for a while, Thief.
Specific numbers (mob HP, drop rates, EXP curves) can vary by server rather than matching legacy GMS values exactly — check the Leveling Route Calculator and EXP Calculator for this server's real synced numbers rather than assuming they match what you remember.
