Class Tier List
A single S/A/B ranking hides the real answer: every classic job line is strong at something specific and weak at something else. Here's the tradeoff for each, by goal.
"Tier list" usually implies one objectively-best ranking, but classic-era job kits don't work that way — a class that dominates AoE training can be mediocre at single-target bossing, and vice versa. The breakdown below separates training/leveling, bossing, and early solo play instead of collapsing them into one number, because those are genuinely different jobs the same class can be good or bad at.
Warrior line
Pros: highest base HP and defense of any line, forgiving AP allocation (mostly STR, some DEX), cheap to gear early since raw stats carry more weight than itemization. Later branches (Paladin's Heaven's Hammer ignoring monster defense, Dark Knight's HP-scaling damage and self-sustain) give it real bossing relevance, not just a tanky early game.
Cons: single-target-leaning kit with weaker native AoE than a mage, so multi-mob training maps are slower per hour unless you're specifically built around one of the AoE-capable branches.
Magician line
Pros: the strongest AoE training kit in the classic job roster — spells like Poison Mist and Paralyze hit a wide area without needing to reposition, which is why mages are the class most associated with fast leveling on a classic-rate server. Bishop, specifically, adds Heal, Resurrection, and the Holy Symbol party EXP buff, making it the closest thing to an all-around top pick once you reach 4th job.
Cons: the worst early game of any line by a wide margin — low HP, real MP-management constraints before sustain skills come online, and a rough first several levels that's much easier with party help than solo. You're trading a hard start for the strongest mid-to-late payoff.
Bowman line
Pros: steady, reliable single-target ranged damage without a mage's HP fragility. Consistent output makes it a low-drama pick for players who want to progress without min-maxing every decision.
Cons: more gear-dependent than Warrior — bow/arrow quality matters more to a bowman's damage than equivalent gear matters to a warrior — and it lacks the standout AoE or utility skill that gives Magician and Warrior their late-game identity. Solid, rarely spectacular.
Thief line
Pros: the highest single-target DPS ceiling in the classic roster once geared — Night Lord and Shadower are consistently cited as top bossing/single-target damage in this era, with mobility that other lines don't have.
Cons: the LUK-scaled claws/daggers a thief needs are usually the scarcest, most expensive gear category on a fresh server's economy, so the ceiling is real but slow to reach. Weakest native AoE of the four lines, so training speed lags Magician specifically.
So, by goal
Fastest leveling: Magician, once past the rough early stretch. Easiest early game: Warrior. Best single-target/bossing ceiling: Thief. Best low-maintenance all-rounder: Bowman. None of this is a fabricated ranking — it reflects broadly-agreed classic-era community consensus about how these kits behave, not exact damage numbers, which will vary by this server's actual mob HP and rates. Cross-check specifics against the Leveling Route Calculator rather than assuming legacy GMS numbers hold exactly.
